My brother and his wife started on the Lighter Life diet a few months before Christmas. You don’t even want to know how much this sort of things costs for 2 people! At first it was fantastic, they were losing weight rapidly and within 6 weeks my brothers wife had lost several stone whilst he had lost about a stone. Other than one very quick visit over Christmas I hadn’t spoke in person to him since.
Jump forward then to last week when I met him for lunch. He was looking heavy. It turns out that the Lighter Lifestyle had not faired so well over Christmas, not only that but once you were back to eating actual food again it was hard to go back to a life of sipping shakes. So at 5 feet 10 my brother has rapidly put on more weight then he lost and is now weighing in at 16 and a half stone. The problem is that Lighter Life doesn’t give you any of the tools needed to make a life change, they simply pump you with just enough calories and the nutrients you need to live. Of course you’ll lose weight, anybody not eating will! Just as inevitable though is that unless you are naturally strong willed you’ll put the weight back on again. It might be 1 month it might be 12 but the weight will go back on.
Just to give you a little insight into my brother’s mentality to food and exercise these are some of the things he has said, before and after spending hundreds of pounds on Lighter Life
1. I don’t eat unhealthily (said before and after)
2. We don’t eat that much (said before and after)
3. It’s all about the exercise and not the food (said before and after)
4. It Marks & Spencer’s fault, do you know they’ve got 3000 calories in one sandwich (err no they haven’t)
5. I’m just waiting for the weather then I’ll get out on my bike (lost count of how many years this has been said)
6. I enjoy food too much (said after Lighter Life)
As you can see Lighter Life has done nothing to help, still in total denial about how much they eat as a family, still in denial about actually doing some exercise and still happy to blame anything and anybody. Losing weight is a very simple maths game, if you burn more calories than you put in then you WILL lose weight. I’ve proven this to myself over the last couple of months. If you are eating healthily and if you’re not eating “that much” then you don’t need an exercise regime. At my brothers height, weight and level of day to day activity for his job he’s burning between 2200 and 2600 (conservative efforts, probably a bit more due to his weight) with no extra exercise required. If he’s not losing weight then HE IS EATING TOO MUCH. If he’s putting on a pound a week then that’s 3500 calories extra a week, or 500 extra calories a day. So instead of the 1800-2000 that would see him steadily losing weight he’s eating closer to 3000 whether he likes it or not.
But how can you survive on 1800 calories a day? Easy! Large bowl of breakfast cereal for breakfast 300 calories, fresh ham and salad sandwich for lunch with a packet of crisps 450 calories, jacket potato, tune salad for dinner, even with butter and a bit of cheese, 1000 calories. Don’t drink calories (stick to water) and it’s easy. Eat on this 3 solid meals basis varying what you eat but being careful to never go over 2000 calories and in 1 week he would lose weight. Will he do it though? No chance. Lighter Life has taught him that the best way to lose weight is to drink shakes. All this talk of eating less and exercising, it’s just crazy talk to my brother.

If you want to permanently want to lose weight you need to change your lifestyle and eating habits. Taking shakes is just a temporarily solution and as soon as you start to eat the way you used to the kilo’s pack on again.
People who take shakes should measure their fat percentage at the start of the shake diet and at the end. A lot of people actually have a higher fat percentage afterwards, which means that they lost a lot of muscle. Not such a good weight loss option!!!
At least you got the right idea! Good luck with the rest of your weight loss journey!

You’re completely right. I guess he just needs to hear it from somebody else other than me. (Good idea about the body fat, I might suggest it to him next time he jumps on a fad).

I have been on the lighter life programme and lost weight . after 12 weeks still slim and very incourge by the programme. The lighter life is the way you change your eating habits after the packs, have been finished. If you follow the rules go to the meeting and find your innner self then the programme works. if you stuff you face with the same crap, as before. Then you will put your weight back on. you need to keep a low Gi foods with medium GI and the weight will keep off. you have to change your eating habits, for the rest of your life .Some people are not willing to do that so when you find yourself looking in the mirror, back to being fat again the only person that has failed is the one who has gone back to the baby step. for anyone to suceed they must be postive with ones, self.
let me tell you a story of my child hood., I had a pet rabbit I loved this rabbit and one day i did not eat my dinner. The next day i came home from school and ran up the garden path . I looked in the cage and my rabbit was gone. I ran into the kitchen to find my dad and killed my rabbit he turned to me he said “now you eat your dinner,” for the rest of my life I suffred THE PAIN of seeing my dead rabbit by eating until i got so fat i hated myself. when i went to lighterlife they gave me an out look on food. so please find that inner self do it for you to be that happy person that you want to be . good luck

I’ve been on lighterlife for 2 months, I lost over 4 stone but didn’t finish the programme. In the last 2 months I’ve managed to keep all but 1/2 a stone off by a mixture of eating less, drinking less and filling in some meals with lighterlife bars or shakes.
Now I’ve put that 1/2 stone back on, it’s triggered a self set level where I promised myself I wouldn’t get any heavier so I’m back on lighter life for a few weeks.
It’s all about the choices you make. Your brother, Paul, needs to look at his life and decide if he wants to die young.
Once he’s made that decision, he’ll find it easier to stick to healthier eating.

I think my brother is beyond saving. We met up recently and he told me that at the moment they are eating take-out/in restaurants 6-7 nights a week! Can you believe that?
He’s obviously given up altogether.
