According to this article the need to drink water to stay healthy is greatly over rated. Now I don’t know about you but this has all the ingredients of one of those studies that has just been set out to argue the toss. A bit like endless “studies” that prove certain foods give you/reduce the risk of cancer. Everybody knows that you need to drink water, your body tells you that when you go without so why publish this sort of rubbish? I guess the only reason is to stir up some controversy and have their names in the paper!
Here are a couple of the claims they say are rubbish and what I think.
Coffee doesn’t hydrate you because it is a diuretic
They Say - Rubbish, because it’s taken in liquid form it’s fine and refreshes.
I Say - I suggest THEY try getting the majority of their liquids from Coffee and see how THEIR body responds before publishing this rubbish. I used to drink coffee by the pint (I had a special mug in work) and the effects of this on digestion, breath and many other things are appalling. Are you left “feeling” thirsty most of the time if you drink coffee, yes.
Drinking water will improve your digestion
They Say - Rubbish, we need roughly 2 litres a day (based on consuming 2000 calories) but most of this will come from our food.
I Say - This doctor is living in cloud cookoo land. If everybody was only consuming 2000 calories a day then there wouldn’t be an obesity epidemic in the Western world. A high fat/low fibre diet that most people now eat needs more water. The extra calories require extra water (fatty foods do not contain much water, if they did they wouldn’t contain the calories!) to digest. In summary you need the extra water to stop your shit drying out and blocking you up.
Drinking Water Can Help As Part Of A Diet
They Say - Rubbish, where’s the proof
I Say - Your stomach is like a container with a switch, hit the full switch and you no longer feel hungry. Drinking water is a very low calorie way of flicking that switch from time to time. Feel like snacking? Drink a pint of water. I know it works because I’ve been doing it for the last 3 months. If it didn’t I’d drink my water and then go and have a packet of crisps!
I’m just poking a bit of fun at it, I’m no doctor. It just seems crazy to me that people (academics) thing that they know better than what are bodies have been telling us for thousands of years. On a personal level I know that drinking extra water has been vital to my own weight loss and better feeling. Yes it has helped my skin as well but I couldn’t really give a monkeys about that (although the wife doesn’t complain).
I’m thinking of writing a study of how we don’t need oxygen to survive, we can get all the air we need from our food, anybody want to sponsor me? Thought not.
