The popularity of kitesurfing has seen staggering growth recently. In fact, according to the sport’s acting governing body, participation figures are increasing faster than any other water-based sports. It is also one of the fastest growing extreme sports out of all of them also, and it seems people are ditching their snowboards in favour of kites, as snowboarding growth has recently been overtaken by this great sport . You will need to seriously work on your body however if you’re considering trying out the sport properly. These main areas are where your fitness focus should be.
- Upper Body Strength. As areas of general fitness go, this has to be among those of greatest importance to train. The majority of effort in the sport comes from the muscles of the upper body and so these are required to be developed in order to properly control yourself and the kite. The main muscle group you need to work on are the deltoids (shoulder muscles). These act as stabilising muscles and also have to control a lot of force through the arms. Also focus on the pectoral muscles and those of the upper back
- Core Strength. As your body tends to be pulled in lots of different directions and is under large amounts of force, you need to be able to stabilise it and have sufficient core muscle tone. A core stability ball is a very useful piece of equipment to use to develop core strength. You will probably have to add weights into you core workouts though in order to replicate the strains you will experience whilst out on the water. Often the kite will want to pull you in a direction you do not want to go so it will be your developed core strength that will let you remain planted
- Aerobic Fitness. Although you might not associate the sport with aerobic fitness, your lungs and heart will need to be in shape. Because lots of different muscles will be called upon frequently, the energy systems will be calling for incredible amounts of oxygen and will be creating large amounts of lactic acid and carbon dioxide. Without strong lung and heart function to get the oxygen around the body and take way the bi-products from the system, fatigue will kick in quickly. Running or swimming are great ways to work on your cardiovascular system.
