As I have alluded to previously I see absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying yourself over the Christmas and New Year period. The key to surviving this with a positive attitude is to prepare yourself before hand. You will eat too much. You will drink too much. You will be feeling like crap (see previous) and so any exercise regime you have will go out the window. In short for that 2 weeks you will put on weight and lose fitness, just accept it. This year I didn’t let myself down at all, I managed to squeeze on just under 4 pounds in that 2 weeks taking me up to 11 stone 8 pound. It’s not the weight that is the killer though, it’s the general flabbiness and lack of fitness. Now it’s the New Year it’s time to make up for those 2 weeks. I’m going to do it quickly as well, in 2 weeks!

The secret to starting the New Year well is two fold:-

1 – You must retrain your body’s food expectations from the Christmas period. At Christmas we eat way too much and our bodies get used to it. They expect it and when they don’t get it they “think” that they’re hungry. Cold turkey (not literally) is the best way to get rid of this and get your body back to a more healthy expectation level (Between 2000-2500 calories a day)

2 – You must recover/gain fitness as quickly as possible. Forget the fat burning zone, hit that next level that gives your heart a good workout. Once your fitness returns everything else comes so much more easily.

So this is my plan (remember this is for 2 weeks only, I’m just giving my body a jump start from its holiday slow down). Eating habits are simple, cereal for breakfast and a big bowl of cereal for lunch (different cereals), each with semi skimmed milk. For my evening meal I will be eating as per normal except 2/3s of my normal portion size. Drinks during the day will be limited to water only. In the evening tea/coffee is OK but no more than 2-3 cups (Try and reduce the amount of sugar). Absolutely no crisps or chocolate must pass my lips. Your body adjusts to the sweetness (read sugar/salt) in foods and gets used to it. Go without for a couple of weeks and you soon adjust, trust me! You will not be able to have cereal for 2 weeks if you’re eating sugary foods, it will just taste too bland and you’ll stop! I will allow myself one treat during this 2 weeks, most probably a Chinese one night (remember to drink plenty of water with it, helps breakdown the fat in your stomach).

In terms of fitness I’m going to put a twist on it. I’ll be giving up my gym membership for 2 weeks. Instead I’ll be using nothing more than the Wii Fit! Seriously, it’s a great tool, but as with any exercise equipment you only get out what you put in. How many people just dither around on it in a half arsed fashion and then complain it doesn’t work? No fatty, it’s you that doesn’t work! The real technique to Wii Fit is to get your heart rate up early with some of the more intense cardio exercises and then keep it there. It’s no use messing around for 20 minutes playing balance games and then doing your run around the island/hula hoop last. Do the run first, get your heart rate up and then it will be higher for whatever else you do! Anyway, it’s the only fitness equipment I’ll be using for the next 2 weeks so lets see how I do?

All sounds easy enough. For the next 2 weeks (starting tomorrow) I’ll be posting daily about what I’ve ate and drank, exactly what exercise I’ve done on the Wii and the calories burnt doing it (I’ll have my Polar watch on during the exercise). With any luck in 2 weeks my body will be back to how it was before Christmas. I’m aiming for between 11 stone 4 and 11 stone 5. Either that or I’ll have made a tit out of myself, nothing new there though!
