My daughter has always put sugar on her breakfast cereal, it’s something that I’ve been trying to get her to stop doing for years. I did it as a kid as well so I know that once you stop for a week or 2 you’ll not go back. I’ve worn her down to the point where she probably only has about a quarter of the sugar that she used to. To try and kick the habit altogether we agreed that she’d give up the sugar on her cereal if I cut down on the sugar in my tea. So since starting this diet I’ve not been allowed to have 2 sugars in any hot drink that I’ve had, to be honest I’m totally used to it now and don’t miss it. During this time I’ve also been eating a lot healthier, relying much less on processed foods and eating more natural flavours (minus the salt and sugar). I think I may have totally reprogrammed my taste buds when it comes to sweet things.
Last night I decided that I was going to treat myself to a Chinese. In my defence I didn’t go for the starter, main and dessert option that I normally would but instead was content with just having a main. The funny thing was that I was only half way through my meal and was struggling, it wasn’t the quantity but rather the taste that was putting me off. It just seemed so sweet, the salt was really standing out. I asked the wife to try it and she said it tasted normal. I tried hers, same again, it was getting to the point where I thought my eyes were going to start watering. The best bit about this is that I don’t feel in any rush to have another take-away. Without any desire to eat salty/sugary foods this whole dieting thing is going to seem much easier.
