There was a great piece on Yahoo yesterday about the 10 worst foods for us. Whilst a lot of those could be classed as the usual suspects I think there were a few surises in their top 10.

Liquid Meals. I really can’t see the problem with these, sure as hell it is common sense that you don’t leave you life only “eating” liquid replacement meals but are even so are they really worthy of the top 10? They are manufactured to be meal replacements and as such should contain all the nutrients needed to function in a normal way. The only real difference being that the number of calories contained can be seriously controlled. Like I said I wouldn’t want to live my whole life having nothing but liquid meals, I’m far too fond of steak for that, but in moderation I can’t see the problem. Besides I can think of about 50 things straight of the top of my head that would do you more harm.

Tinned Soups. Salt, salt, salt. Yes we all already know that tinned food in general contains a lot of hidden salt. Tinned soup is no different in that regard. The original report does however seem to ignore the fact that most tinned soups are vegetable based and happen to contain lots of things that are good for you. You’ll find a lot of foods that contain more salt than tinned soup whilst also giving you very little nutritional value. To include tinned soup in a top 10 worst foods article seems a bit stupid and even perhaps biased to me.

For completenes the entire list comprised off:-

Pork Scratchings (Lovely but a bit rough on your teeth)
Fried Desserts (Having a pop at Scotland)
Cheesy Chips (Having a pop at Canada and the Isle of Man)
Fizzy Drinks (Agree with this, a glass can have more calories than a meal)
Coloured Alcopops (Can’t stand these, If you’re going to drink at least have a grown up drink)
Liquid Meals (See above)
Processed Meat (In moderation, fine as far as I’m concerned)
Chicken Nuggets (For the sole reason they are small and deep fried, what about onion rings???)
Doughnuts (Homer says Doh!)
Canned Soups (See above)

I wonder how many of them you eat on a regular basis?

Think of all the names those with psychic powers been called throughout the years: clairvoyant, fortune tellers, augur, and prophets. There are many different titles given to those who have any type of powers related to second sight, but the actual powers and activities of this group have been the same throughout the years.

Psychic powers can vary tremendously, but they all have one thing in common: the ability to see things that others cannot see with their naked eye. For some psychics this involves communicating with dead people; which is called being a medium. Still others may feel they can read tarot cards or other tools of the trade.

Psychics help people by giving them psychic readings. During these readings, they claim to be able to tap further into out subconscious than we can. That is why they can help us to answer tough questions about ourselves and our relationships.

Many people find that they enjoy having a psychic reading; however, some people are very shaken by psychic powers. Sometimes people find out things about themselves that they really didn’t want to know.

The very first known psychic lived from 1766 to 1815. Dr. Franz Antoine Mesmer has come under some scrutiny in modern days, but in his lifetime he was known as a clairvoyant with the power to heal. Exactly how powerful he actually was will never be known.

The Hydesville psychic movement of the 1940s was a big phenomenon and the Fox Sisters were right at the center of the action. Known for their ability to draw out dead people and make them communicate by moving things or making weird sounds, Margaret, Kate, and Leah Fox would put on fascinating shows in their time.

At the time all of this was going on, most people refused to believe in this type of power. Even Houdini came out stating this type of activity was being faked. There were even many churches in on the action, holding services to ward off demons and communicating with the dead.

There have been many times throughout history that people have claimed to have gifts of prophecy and precognitive abilities. Almost everyone has precognitive abilities. A good example is when someone knows who is calling them before they look or answer the phone. Another example is when a person gets a sudden urge to call a loved one, when they sense that something is very wrong.

Many people with psychic abilities feel they are actually being steered by the universe in different directions. They usually participate in what is know as Mantic Arts. This is essentially where the person believes they can look at stones, tea leaves, and other objects and read messages or signs. For instance, some priests used to pour oil into water and attempt to see the future. The Christian church considered this dangerous and banned the practice.

The Universe guides may psychics in reading signs and symbols. These psychics believe that items such as stones, sticks, cards, dice, tealeaves, and shells and help them to predict the future. At one time priests would try to predict the future by watching the patterns that occurred when he poured oil into water. These practices are referred to as mantic arts. We find that in history many of these practices were banned and ever persecuted by Christians.

The roots of psychic readings go way back to the beginnings of time, where they were ever present in the ancient world. It was known that the King of Egypt kept psychics always on hand as a part of the royal court. They would be consulted for major decisions and of course, they could be imprisoned or killed for giving the wrong answers to the King’s problems.

Later, psychic readers were prosecuted along with fortunetellers, during the Salem Witch Trials. At this time, Christians came down hard on these women because they claimed that this was the work of the devil.

Of course, there is still a lot of doubt and skepticism surrounding this type of power. While it is no longer demonized, many people still do not believe psychic powers are real.

Yet, that doesn’t mean everyone believes that psychic powers are real. Many people are still very skeptical.

While it is true that some people set up shop as a psychic without any real powers, there are many really powerful psychics in our time. You have to take the fakes with any industry in our day.

There is also ever increasing scientific evidence to show that everyone has some degree of psychic ability which can be enhanced by the right training.

Are you being troubled by episodes of sleep paralysis? If you are wondering whether something can be done about it then the answer is yes. Just go through the following article and get to know the facts.

If you sometimes find that you are paralyzed during sleep and you cannot move then you are suffering from sleep paralysis. This condition will affect the average person more than once in their lifetime. For some however the occurrences are more frequent and can be terrifying. Sleep paralysis is triggered by many things but it can be prevented or avoided.

You can find detailed and comprehensive sleep paralysis techniques at any one of the following: treatment for sleep paralysis, sleep paralyses, Sleep Paralysis Treatment

The underlying factor of sleep paralysis is that of partial consciousness. These episodes occur if whilst having a dream you are interrupted and the brain reacts much faster than the body can respond. You then experience the sensation that the dream you were having is real. In trying to respond to it you find that you cannot even move a single muscle.

The reason for this is that the transition from being asleep to full consciousness is meant to be gradual and not sudden. If something suddenly wakes you up whilst you are having a dream then paralysis is likely to set in. Being paralyzed during sleep is actually meant to be a protective measure for you. The body is trying to prevent you from reacting to something that is not there.

Panic and fear usually set in when one tries to scream and the sound does not even come out. What disturbs me the most though is that these so called hallucinations seem so real at the time they occur. With so many repeated occurrences happening to me I couldn’t stand it any longer and decided to research.

I have encountered many suggested solutions and techniques to this problem. Some methods are as simple as avoidance techniques of known causes, to meditation and yoga. If you are experiencing episodes where by you become paralyzed during sleep solutions are always there. It is quite possible to sleep and rest peacefully at night.

I don’t even know how this ended up in our house. Chocolate I can take or leave but Nutella is a different thing altogether, I have very fond memories of sitting in front of Platoon and eating a whole tub of it as a kid. So no sooner was it in the house than I was having to sample it with a spoon. It’s without doubt the nicest chocolaty type thing you can buy, but just how healthy is it?

Looking at the raw calories Nutella should be the devils food. Each small tub contains over 2500 calories! But it’s made with like 5,000 hazelnuts, nuts are good right? As they put it, lots of nuts, some sugar, milk and a bit of cocoa. How can that possibly be bad for you. This is where the secret is to Nutella and any other treats for that matter. In moderation there is absolutely nothing with Nutella, it’s even advertised as being part of a child friendly breakfast. The problem comes with Nutella addiction, basically it’s so bloody nice that once you start you can’t stop.

Eating Nutella by the spoonful is not a good idea, for me though just having Nutella in the house is not a good idea full stop!

I read this today and couldn’t believe it. That’s how many crisps (chips if you’re American) that gets consumed whilst people watch the Super Bowl, that’s a shit load of crisps! Lets do a little maths with that.

So lets go for an average bag of crisps which weights 25 grams and contains 160 calories. So that’s 640 calories per hundred grams or 6400 per kilo. A metric tonne (which I’ll presume is what they are talking about) contains 1000 kilos so that’s 6,400,000 calories per tonne. Times the 14,500 tonnes that will be ate and that’s a grand fat staggering total of 92,800,000,000 calories (just in crisps). And the scariest thing about this is that it is all consumed whilst watching a sport, of sorts. If you’re wondering what the food bill is like then its thought that Americans will spend $50 million dollars on food in the run up to this Super Bowl. Credit crunch, what credit crunch?

If you are going to watch the game though and if you’re bored of chips and dips then there are a variety of things you can try. I stumbled across a pretty good guide of recipes for the Super Bowl. Most of which aren’t exactly healthy but a few of which just about pass the grade.

I sometimes laugh at TV chefs, with their half kilo of butter added to everything and most food dripping in oil and fat. They tell you it’s OK though because it’s fresh produce! It’s the same when you go our for a meal, because it’s freshly prepared then it’s not that bad for you right? 3,000 calories is 3,000 calories whether it be in the freshest of fresh produce or some pice of crap frozen meal. Well welcome to the Heart Attack Grill!

Based in Chandler, Arizona it’s claiming to be the worlds first honest restaurant. You eat this many calories and you will die! Fresh on the menu is a Quadruple Bypas burger containing more than 8,000 calories. Top that with some fires freshly deep fried in lard (which suprising to know isn’t actually that bad compared to deep frying in oil) and you’ve got enough calories to last you 4 days. The great news is that if you do pass out there are some crackling looking waitresses (nurses) to help bring you around. The Heart Attack Grill, it sounds the sort of place that everybody needs to visit once in their life, maybe just the once though!

alcoholic
The term alcoholic is generally defined as someone who is addicted to alcohol. Addiction in turn is defined as a maladaptive pattern of drinking that leads to significant personal problems as defined by 3 or more of the following in the same 12 month period:

 1. Drinking larger amounts or over longer period than intended.
2. Persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control drinking.
3. Drinking that interferes with family, friends, or job.
4. Continued drinking despite negative consequences such as divorce, lost job, DWI conviction.
5. Tolerance, meaning that over time it takes more alcohol to get drunk than it used to.
6. Withdrawal, meaning that the person has unpleasant symptoms if they stop drinking.

Well judjing by last Saturdays efforts I think I can safely say I qualify for the first 3. You see the problem I have is that on the odd occasion I do go out for a “session” with some friends I can’t stop. I get a gate fever that means I just don’t want to go home. I’ll drink and drink and drink until I fall over and then drink some more. I might only do this 2-3 times a year but the truth is that I feel helpless to stop it.

On Saturday I set out with the plan of having a good night, drinking bottled beer until about 12 o’clock, getting something to eat and then jumping in a taxi and heading home. What actually happened was we drank at a nice pace up until about 11pm, at which point I felt a lot less drunk than my friends so decided to pick up the pace and get drunk(only an hour to go you see). I have a brain malfunction that struggles to define what drunk really is. The next thing I remember was falling through our front door at 5am, wet and looking like I’d been dragged through a hedge. My best guess of how the night turned out was

1. Till 11:30pm, Nice happy drunk and in good form
2. 11:30pm – 1am, drinking too much drunk, slurring of words and generally being a very drunk, drunk
3. 1am till closing time, legless drunk, best left alone to sit down
4. Wandering around looking for a taxi not being able to find one and then deciding to make the walk home
5. From 3am till about 5am, stumbling along banging of walls until eventually falling through the door at home

All this from what was supposed to just be a normal, nice, night out. Why? My wife is a star, why she puts up with this I have no idea, I suppose my only saving grace is that fact I go out so little. Is that really an excuse to get paralytic though? I don’t think so. I can’t put into words just how f*****g annoyed I am with myself. I’m married and I have a daughter, there is no excuse for me to go out and get into a state where I can’t remember half the night. If anyone asks I had a great night, this is because that only bits I can remember were great. I can’t comment on the rest.

Anyway, so I’ve been suffering all week, I’ve not been able to work until today and I still have the nagging feeling that I’ve done something bad to my insides. No gym, no exercise for a while. So my drinking has resulted in me getting way more drunk than I’d ever want to, causing upset and friction with my wife, sickness and me to miss almost a whole week of work.

Setting up this online diary helped me to lose the weight I’d been wanting to shift for so long, I only hope it can also help to shame me into knocking this habit on the head. I don’t even know where to start though, drinking is a way of life where I live. Would my friends understand if I stuck to the soft stuff, I hope so?
