When you ask most people about exercise they will immediately think back to horrid school days, doing laps of the school running track in very short shorts. Fitness and exercise has thankfully come a long way since those days and now there are more ways to stay in shape than ever before. Vast improvements in technology has meant that more people are able to exercise in their own time and in their own way, and perhaps most importantly, get expert guidance at the same time.
Wii Fit – The Wii Fitness console, as well as being primarily for playing games, has also capitalised on the fitness market and has redefined the way that many people exercise at home. The Wii Fit Board can be used to take part in a Pilates lesson, or for your own digital personal trainer to keep and eye on your fitness progress. ‘ Your Shape’ is the latest offering from the Wii group, which is a camera you mount on your TV that tracks your actions and tells you if your exercising right.
Nike+ – This very clever gadget saw Nike team up with Apple’s ipod to offer runners a way to track exactly how far and fast they were running, as well a whole host of other features. The small device that you place in your shoe works using wireless electrical components that relays information about your running to your ipod. You can later download this information to your home computer and keep track of your running performance and progress. You can even set your ipod to adjust the pace of the songs its plays based on the pace of your running…very clever.
Project Natal – This evolution for the Xbox takes interactive gaming to the next level and like the Wii Fit, there is a serious fitness focus that comes with it. Project Natal uses a very clever camera to map your exact movements and even recognise your face, so there is no need to login, just look into the camera. It maps the movement of your hands meaning you don’t need any accessories to have a sword fight or go bowling.
